WhatsApp Introduces “Voicemail” Voice Messages for Missed Calls

The new Android beta of WhatsApp (version 2.25.23.21) has released a feature that basically works like an in-built voicemail. Within the beta, when a call gets ended without being picked up, the “Record voice message” short is shown at the bottom of the calling screen. The same notification is shown in the conversation where the missed call is recorded.

The caller just taps on the microphone icon to record a response (usually by holding the button, just like a regular voice note). Once the recording is sent, it’s received straight into the chat along with the missed-call notification. To put it simply, the recipient gets to see both the missed-call entry and the fresh voice note in the same conversation, ensuring follow-up is a breeze without needing to switch between apps.

Why WhatsApp Added This Feature

This voicemail-like feature was added to simplify communication after a missed call. Most users use voice calls for urgent news, and a missed call would necessitate a follow-up message or a call back. Today, WhatsApp allows callers to provide key information at once through voice. For instance, if you’re calling a coworker and they are unavailable (e.g., in a meeting), you can immediately leave a quick voice note stating the reason. Technology analysts note that follow-ups become quicker and more intimate – it’s quicker to talk than to type out a lengthy message when time is of the essence. By reflecting the traditional voicemail but maintaining it all within the chat conversation, the feature makes convenience without compromising on privacy.

As one article states, WhatsApp is “helping ensure that important information is delivered without delay” even when a call doesn’t get answered. The update reinforces other recent calling features (such as reminders for missed calls) and indicates that WhatsApp is intentionally upgrading its voice-calling functionality in response to users’ requirements
